A Calligraphy Tribute to Felicity

August 8, 2013

Felicity Opening Credit Photo

Oh, Felicity. I remember being addicted to this college soap – with its hopeless romantic protagonist, New York City setting, and yes – art school. Just recalling the show gives me this sense of nostalgia that’s not too easy to brush off. As Felicity was painting for her art classes, I was also spending sleepless nights trying to get by on my own art projects. However, I didn’t live in a huge dorm room in NY, or worked at a cool coffee shop. I couldn’t paint with an easel. Unlike Felicity, I paint on the floor.

Felicity at the time, became a template for those college drama queens. It was tailor-made for girls my age. Remember those movies or TV shows when you feel that everything the characters say just totally relates to how you feel? It was all that. See, Felicity Porter ditched Stanford University to go after her high school crush, Ben Covington. I cannot imagine doing such a horrible thing. He didn’t even knew she existed. And bam! In college they suddenly become close friends, even though Felicity was obviously obsessing over him – in a super weird way, mind you. What makes it even better (or worse, I can’t tell) is they actually fall in love. Yep. They did.

Gosh, I loved that show.

As a tribute to one of my favorite shows of all time, I wrote quotes for my calligraphy practice. It does feel good, reminiscing about how hooked I was back then… when little squabbles with girlfriends were already a big deal, and hanging out with friends was an essential part of our existence. Life was more laid back, time just seemed to move a little slower. Oh, and it was also like, a time when we like, talk this way for like, forever. But seriously? Those were pretty good times.

Geli, you’re welcome! Gosh, Felicity has a lot of quotes that can really get us thinking. These two are my favorite.

On a sunny afternoon in Tokyo, my family and I made the short walk from Kuramae Station to Kakimori, a stationery lover’s dream tucked away in the neighborhood.

The moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by shelves lined with fountain pens, rollerballs, inks, and stationery. Across the shop were displays of different paper options for those looking to customize their own notebooks.

Of course, I had to try Kakimori’s signature dip pens. However, I found the nib a little too thick for writing.

Upstairs, I visited Inkstand, where one can create their own custom ink blends. It was a fun space to explore, and the view overlooking the shop below was a nice bonus.

I left with a couple of fountain pens and inks that I’m excited to share in my next post! ✒️

When was the last time you wrote a letter to yours When was the last time you wrote a letter to yourself? 💌

During our workshop, everyone received these pretty Cafe Mary Grace greeting cards. The prompt was simple: write something heartfelt. It could be for a loved one, or a message for your future self.

I decided to write to my future self for this demo. No need for perfection, just enjoying the ink touching the paper, especially when the paper is this smooth.

Save this for the next time you need a reminder to slow down and check in with yourself. 🤍

A slow afternoon well spent. 🤍    I recently taugh A slow afternoon well spent. 🤍

I recently taught the very first workshop for @cafemarygrace ‘s Art of Slow series at their gorgeous Parqal Mall branch. Instead of worrying about perfect technical form, we focused entirely on intention, mindful creation, and embracing the simple joys of slow living.

The afternoon culminated in everyone writing a heartfelt letter to themselves or someone they love, finished with a traditional wax seal. ✉️✨

To cap off the experience, we treated our senses to Mary Grace’s delicious new menu additions: the Vigan Longganiza Pasta, refreshing Lemon Basil Soda, and their delicious Mango Mousse.

Thank you to everyone who paused their busy days to create with us. Here’s to more moments of slowing down.
