The Happy Hour Calligraphy Workshop {June 2014}

August 1, 2014

I was back at Joo Chiat for the June session of The Happy Hour Modern Calligraphy Workshops. I love this group – our small class of 8 wonderful ladies arrived all eager to learn a new craft. I had the pleasure of finding out how two of them wrote Arabic calligraphy when they were young, and how totally different it was with pointed pen calligraphy. We had a wedding planner, and one who is getting married next year (yay!), one who is into the art of paper quilling, and one who was moving to Bangkok the coming weekend! I have to say we were a pretty diverse group.

I’ll let these photos speak for themselves! Curious to know more about what went on? I loved reading about the participants’ side of the story. Read more from Priya and Adilah. Oh, and I’m giving a special shout out to my hubby and photographer Reggie who always helps me set up and take photos of every class I have. <3

Sign up for class registration updates here. Hope to see you in my next class, and immerse in the art of modern calligraphy!

Potatoes and calligraphy? 🥔➕✍🏻    Potatoes have be Potatoes and calligraphy? 🥔➕✍🏻

Potatoes have been used by some to prep their new nibs before use. I’ve always had my doubts, so I made a little experiment to see if it actually works.

Yes it does!

However, I still prefer my own way of cleaning nibs. I just spray rubbing alcohol on a new nib and wipe it off, and it’s ready to use. I hate wasting a potato (even if it’s just a small one) just for my nibs.

What’s your favorite way of prepping new nibs? ✨

I was expecting sunflower yellow… 🌻    Instead, Su I was expecting sunflower yellow… 🌻

Instead, Sunflower Fields surprised me with a warm amber that turns into a burnt-orange shade as it dries. It’s like an entire sunflower field under the late afternoon sun.

It’s warm and earthy, and I can see that it’s perfect for autumn journal spreads, cozy letters, and sketchbook accents. I tried to paint a rose with it, too!

Sometimes the best inks are the ones that don’t match our expectations.

If you’re visiting Tokyo for stationery, don’t ove If you’re visiting Tokyo for stationery, don’t overlook Loft Ikebukuro! ✨

While the Shibuya and Ginza branches are popular, I found the Ikebukuro location easier to browse because it felt less crowded during my visit. It also had a great selection of notebooks, pens, inks, and journaling supplies, so I never felt like I was compromising by skipping the busier stores.

It’s four levels within the Seibu Department Store and is just beside the train station. There’s also a small cafe where my kids hung out, while my husband and I took turns shopping.

If you only had time for one Loft, which would you choose?

✨ Kakimori Inks, first impressions! I finally got ✨ Kakimori Inks, first impressions!

I finally got to try the two inks I picked up from @kakimori_japan in Tokyo—Tototo, a rich deep magenta, and Harvest Gold, a warm golden mustard.

Both are beautifully saturated and flowed effortlessly with my glass pen from @auneda. Which one would you add to your collection? 💛💜
