Calligraphy at Malacañang: Workshops Celebrating Women’s Month 2025

April 9, 2025

What an incredible day filled with ink, focus, and creative energy! I was very happy to be part of the 2025 National Women’s Month celebrations within the halls of Malacañang, in Manila, Philippines. Thanks to the wonderful Gender and Development Focal Point System (OP-GFPS), I had the opportunity to teach these corporate workshops on modern calligraphy and brush lettering with employees from various offices.

Held at the MESLA Conference Hall, the day was structured as a back-to-back workshop event, welcoming a total of 100 participants eager to learn a new artistic skill. It was inspiring to see so many of them ready to step away from their demanding roles to learn a new craft.

Morning Session: The Elegance of Modern Pointed Pen Calligraphy

The day kicked off with our Modern Calligraphy workshop. 50 participants joined me to explore the timeless art of writing with dip pens and ink. We focused on creating contemporary cursive script. There’s a unique, meditative quality to using a pointed pen – the scratch of the nib on paper, the flow of the ink – and it was wonderful to see everyone concentrating and finding their rhythm.

Afternoon Session: Bouncing into Brush Lettering

After a quick break for lunch, we reset the room and welcomed a fresh batch of 50 participants for our Brush Lettering workshop. Brush lettering offers a different kind of energy – often bolder and bouncier – and it was great to see this second group embrace the techniques of varying pressure to create thick and thin strokes. The eagerness to learn remained just as high in the afternoon, filling the room with laughter and positive vibes.

It truly was a fun, fulfilling day connecting with the talented individuals who serve at Malacañang. Seeing their dedication extend from their official duties to learning a new craft was inspiring.

A huge thank you goes out to the organizers from the OP-GFPS. Your warm welcome made this event seamless and truly special. I’m so grateful for the invitation to contribute to your National Women’s Month activities and share my passion for calligraphy.

I bought the Kakimori Frost pen in moss specifically for my sweet-scented milky matcha ink. They’re a perfect pair! No performative aesthetics here, just pure writing satisfaction.

Stationery lovers, add this to your Tokyo bucket list 🇯🇵👇

Hidden just a few minutes from Nakameguro Station is the Traveler’s Factory. You’ll find this nondescript gray building tucked away in a quiet alley. There was a short line of patrons outside when I got there, but it moves fast and is so worth the wait!

Think walls lined with leather Traveler’s Notebooks, limited-edition refills, vintage-style stamps, and brass accessories to customize your setup. Love the display of washi tapes, and some pens and inks as well.

Save this post for your next trip to Tokyo!

On a sunny afternoon in Tokyo, my family and I made the short walk from Kuramae Station to Kakimori, a stationery lover’s dream tucked away in the neighborhood.

The moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by shelves lined with fountain pens, rollerballs, inks, and stationery. Across the shop were displays of different paper options for those looking to customize their own notebooks.

Of course, I had to try Kakimori’s signature dip pens. However, I found the nib a little too thick for writing.

Upstairs, I visited Inkstand, where one can create their own custom ink blends. It was a fun space to explore, and the view overlooking the shop below was a nice bonus.

I left with a couple of fountain pens and inks that I’m excited to share in my next post! ✒️
