Calligra-freebie: Calligraphy Guidelines

February 1, 2018

Free Calligraphy Guidelines via Happy Hands Project

A few weeks ago I made the ultimate calligraphy checklist available for download. Now it’s time to practice, so whip out your beginners’ tools because it’s time to start writing! Here’s another calligra-freebie—guidelines you can download for free and print so you can practice on your letter forms.

True story: I was teaching a workshop where the participant did not care about the guidelines on her practice sheets. I told her that for starters, making the base of the letters touch the baseline would make her writing legible and the sizes consistent. She replied nonchalantly, “I’m trying to bounce my lettering”. I insisted that she MUST follow the guidelines provided (nicely, of course). Let’s start by following the basic rules, people.

These free guidelines come in 2 sizes—A4 and letter. The x’s on the sides mark the x-height of the letter (which is the size of the lower case x) and the slants are based on Copperplate‘s 55° angle. It’s a challenge to keep your slants consistent, hence the slant guides. The best way to use these guidelines is to print them on your practice paper, or print one sheet and place tracing paper over it. Use paper clips to secure the sheets in place.

Is learning calligraphy one of your goals for 2018? No time to waste then, my friends. Download these guide sheets for free.

Send me the calligraphy guidelines, please!

Oh, and if you’re looking for a modern calligraphy exemplar, you can download one here.

I bought the Kakimori Frost pen in moss specifically for my sweet-scented milky matcha ink. They’re a perfect pair! No performative aesthetics here, just pure writing satisfaction.

Stationery lovers, add this to your Tokyo bucket list 🇯🇵👇

Hidden just a few minutes from Nakameguro Station is the Traveler’s Factory. You’ll find this nondescript gray building tucked away in a quiet alley. There was a short line of patrons outside when I got there, but it moves fast and is so worth the wait!

Think walls lined with leather Traveler’s Notebooks, limited-edition refills, vintage-style stamps, and brass accessories to customize your setup. Love the display of washi tapes, and some pens and inks as well.

Save this post for your next trip to Tokyo!

On a sunny afternoon in Tokyo, my family and I made the short walk from Kuramae Station to Kakimori, a stationery lover’s dream tucked away in the neighborhood.

The moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by shelves lined with fountain pens, rollerballs, inks, and stationery. Across the shop were displays of different paper options for those looking to customize their own notebooks.

Of course, I had to try Kakimori’s signature dip pens. However, I found the nib a little too thick for writing.

Upstairs, I visited Inkstand, where one can create their own custom ink blends. It was a fun space to explore, and the view overlooking the shop below was a nice bonus.

I left with a couple of fountain pens and inks that I’m excited to share in my next post! ✒️
