Sheaffer Calligraphy Maxi Set Review

February 23, 2026

I have new pens! Please welcome the Sheaffer Calligraphy Maxi Set. My thoughtful husband picked up this set for me, which is an affordable and useful addition to my practice kit. If you’re looking for a good calligraphy set for beginners in the Philippines, keep reading!

The Sheaffer Calligraphy Maxi Set is a fun and effective tool for those just diving into the beautiful world of broad-edge calligraphy (scripts like Italic, Gothic, Uncial or Foundational). As some of you might have seen in my Instagram and TikTok posts, I’ve just started learning Uncial script, and I’ve been using these pens (two out of the three in the set) and they have been very useful.

The set includes pens with three nib sizes. I’ve found the two broader tips to be particularly useful for creating classic, defined letterforms with excellent line variation. This is also a convenient, carry-around calligraphy set. It’s perfect for practicing wherever inspiration strikes, making it one of the best affordable fountain pen sets for students and hobbyists.

First impressions matter! The Shaeffer Calligraphy Maxi Set comes in three deliciously bright colors. Two of the pens were easy to assemble and ink. However, as a real-world test, I encountered a minor issue you might also face: I had to flush the broad edged pen twice with water before the ink flowed smoothly. Don’t let this discourage you, though. If you experience ink flow issues with any fountain pen, a quick flush often solves the problem.

The included cartridges are a major plus. The inks come in a variety of colors, which allowed me to mix and match ink colors with the bright pen bodies, which I enjoyed very much.

Now, I find the Shaeffer inks to be watery. I tried writing on the pad that came with the set, then with some coated copy paper and my Rhodia grid pad. The ink kept feathering. Imagine my frustration! The ink did not work well with the paper that came with it! I had to check my stash for the right kind of paper to use (and it wasn’t easy—I had a huge stash). Finally, I got what I needed. For smooth, crisp lines, the Sheaffer inks worked well with the Clairefontaine Triomphe pad! The smooth, bleed-proof paper handled the watery ink perfectly.

So for the final verdict: Is the Sheaffer Calligraphy Maxi Set worth it? Absolutely.

This set is an affordable calligraphy starter kit that offers great value. Despite the small initial flow issue and the necessity of using quality paper, the overall experience is highly positive, especially for calligraphy beginners looking for an accessible entry point. It also comes with a pad and a calligraphy booklet, though I didn’t get to use the pad as it could not take the inks well.

If you’re looking for a fun and budget-friendly way to get into broad-edge calligraphy, definitely check out the Sheaffer Calligraphy Maxi Set . I got mine from National Bookstore.

Instead, Sunflower Fields surprised me with a warm amber that turns into a burnt-orange shade as it dries. It’s like an entire sunflower field under the late afternoon sun.

It’s warm and earthy, and I can see that it’s perfect for autumn journal spreads, cozy letters, and sketchbook accents. I tried to paint a rose with it, too!

If you’re visiting Tokyo for stationery, don’t ove If you’re visiting Tokyo for stationery, don’t overlook Loft Ikebukuro! ✨

While the Shibuya and Ginza branches are popular, I found the Ikebukuro location easier to browse because it felt less crowded during my visit. It also had a great selection of notebooks, pens, inks, and journaling supplies, so I never felt like I was compromising by skipping the busier stores.

It’s four levels within the Seibu Department Store and is just beside the train station. There’s also a small cafe where my kids hung out, while my husband and I took turns shopping.

If you only had time for one Loft, which would you choose?

✨ Kakimori Inks, first impressions! I finally got ✨ Kakimori Inks, first impressions!

I finally got to try the two inks I picked up from @kakimori_japan in Tokyo—Tototo, a rich deep magenta, and Harvest Gold, a warm golden mustard.

Both are beautifully saturated and flowed effortlessly with my glass pen from @auneda. Which one would you add to your collection? 💛💜

It’s Friday! ✨    Practice has been non-existent l It’s Friday! ✨

Practice has been non-existent lately, hence my uncial’s a little shaky. So I’m pairing this with some Michael Jackson to make up for it.

Friday night means we get to order kebabs for dinner and afterwards I can sit and watch Netflix while eating a slice of sticky chocolate cake (which I learned is a Swedish recipe, and I made it myself).

Yay weekend!
