The Happy Hour Calligraphy Workshop at The Untitled Space

December 15, 2015

The last Beginners’ workshop of the year is worthy of its own blog post, because it marks the beginning of another year of learning and teaching this lovely craft. If I’m not mistaken, I started with the Happy Hour Workshops in March of 2014 with only 8 participants. At present, due to the demand, we have doubled that number and each class is still always fun and interesting, thanks to the diverse group that I get to teach every time.

Last Saturday’s workshop was packed to the brim. We made good use of the ‘Make Your Own Happy Hour’ pads, and were treated to a lovely spread of pastries and artisan coffee. The Untitled Space studio was bathed in beautiful light at that time of the day, and I couldn’t be any happier! It makes for great photos, too.

One thing I learned about teaching modern calligraphy is that each student has a certain difficulty to overcome, and it is through experience that I am able to address the issue. It feels great when after some drills and practice strokes, I could see the progress that each student makes.

I will be back in January for a couple of Beginners’ classes, and Advanced classes will follow (crosses fingers). If you’re interested, leave your email address to subscribe to the newsletter. I cannot wait for a new round of workshops for the next year!

For artists and creatives looking for a venue for your workshops and exhibitions, I would highly recommend The Untitled Space. The photos speak for themselves, don’t you think?

I am a left handed and am interest to attend your class for January 2016, however, do you think i’ll have any problems with the writing since I assume the ink takes a while to dry and as such I may potentially have my calligraphy smydged all over the happy hour work pad!

Hi Tracy! If you’re an underwriter, it won’t be a problem because your hand is positioned below what you’re writing. If you hook your hand, it needs practice to re-position the hand… but once you get used to it, it’s so worth it! 🙂

Potatoes and calligraphy? 🥔➕✍🏻    Potatoes have be Potatoes and calligraphy? 🥔➕✍🏻

Potatoes have been used by some to prep their new nibs before use. I’ve always had my doubts, so I made a little experiment to see if it actually works.

Yes it does!

However, I still prefer my own way of cleaning nibs. I just spray rubbing alcohol on a new nib and wipe it off, and it’s ready to use. I hate wasting a potato (even if it’s just a small one) just for my nibs.

What’s your favorite way of prepping new nibs? ✨

I was expecting sunflower yellow… 🌻    Instead, Su I was expecting sunflower yellow… 🌻

Instead, Sunflower Fields surprised me with a warm amber that turns into a burnt-orange shade as it dries. It’s like an entire sunflower field under the late afternoon sun.

It’s warm and earthy, and I can see that it’s perfect for autumn journal spreads, cozy letters, and sketchbook accents. I tried to paint a rose with it, too!

Sometimes the best inks are the ones that don’t match our expectations.

If you’re visiting Tokyo for stationery, don’t ove If you’re visiting Tokyo for stationery, don’t overlook Loft Ikebukuro! ✨

While the Shibuya and Ginza branches are popular, I found the Ikebukuro location easier to browse because it felt less crowded during my visit. It also had a great selection of notebooks, pens, inks, and journaling supplies, so I never felt like I was compromising by skipping the busier stores.

It’s four levels within the Seibu Department Store and is just beside the train station. There’s also a small cafe where my kids hung out, while my husband and I took turns shopping.

If you only had time for one Loft, which would you choose?

✨ Kakimori Inks, first impressions! I finally got ✨ Kakimori Inks, first impressions!

I finally got to try the two inks I picked up from @kakimori_japan in Tokyo—Tototo, a rich deep magenta, and Harvest Gold, a warm golden mustard.

Both are beautifully saturated and flowed effortlessly with my glass pen from @auneda. Which one would you add to your collection? 💛💜
