Last fall, I was back in Tokyo and had a chance to drop by Paper Tree to stock up on calligraphy supplies. While I explored the vibrant city and ate all the good food I could find, one of my most anticipated stops was Paper Tree.
Picture this: Tokyo in autumn, a gentle rain falling steadily — it was a scene straight out of a movie. It rained the entire day I planned to visit Paper Tree, and it was still coming down when I finally arrived. My kids, troopers that they are, patiently waited with their dad at a nearby Lawson, happily munching on onigiri while I indulged my calligraphy passion (seriously, they ate onigiri every day and never got sick of it).
Paper Tree Tokyo has an incredible selection of calligraphy and art supplies. They’re known for stocking a wide range of high-quality inks, papers, and tools that cater to both beginners and seasoned artists. Finding it was relatively easy; it’s tucked away in Chiyoda, a charming area of Tokyo.
I was particularly eager to explore their ink collection and metallic watercolors. I knew I wanted to stock up on nibs, both for my personal use and for the calligraphy workshops I teach.
The staff at Paper Tree were very helpful and friendly. They patiently answered my questions and even showed me a booklet filled with metallic watercolour swatches. Let me tell you, it was glorious! Trying to choose from the vast selection of colours was a delightful challenge. After much deliberation, I finally decided on The Creative Kinds metallic watercolours and some of the classic Coliro Colors, which has always been my fave.
Beyond the inks and watercolours, Paper Tree also had a fantastic selection of washi paper (so beautiful!), calligraphy oblique holders, various brands of inks, wax seals, glass pens, and even beautifully designed wrapping paper. Aside from inks and nibs, I also got some Tomoe River paper for my Spencerian practice.
The staff even gave me a peek at their workshop space. It was inspiring to see where other creatives gather to learn and share their passion for art.
Despite the rainy, and eventually dark, Tokyo evening, I left Paper Tree with a heart so full (and my wallet incredibly light). I was already looking forward to my next visit! If you’re a calligraphy or art supply lover visiting Tokyo, Paper Tree is an absolute must-visit. It’s more than just a shop; it’s an experience.
